IT Trainer Volunteer Roles

As an IT trainer you will provide vital skills for clients wanting to return to the workplace.  IT trainers are expected to be qualified teachers/tutors.

This role involves:

The role of the IT trainer is to provide one-to-one tuition and guidance on Microsoft Office packages and the internet, tailored to the clients’ needs. The support can range from setting up an email account and how to send attachments to complex Excel functions.  The IT trainer would also give ideas of where to look for help e.g. Microsoft’s own training website
 

Typical areas of support include:

  • Layout of a CV – how to change the margins, line up sections using a table, bullets
  • How to send a cv by email
  • How to create folders on a pc and also labels/folders in email
  • How to use  Word Excel and Powerpoint – occasionally Publisher  (and be able to relate the training with Resource’s versions  of software i.e. Office 2010 with older and Mac versions that a client may have encountered)
  • Help with creating a PowerPoint presentation for a job interview
  • LinkedIn – setting up profile
  • Simple overview of Access database
  • Using calendar in Outlook
  • Using social media to promote a business

The focus of the sessions will vary according to the type of work that a client is seeking.  Examples of individual scenarios that the IT trainer may be asked to provide support include:  

  • Business applications for office ‘secretarial’ jobs – mail merge, simple spread sheets, printing and changing Powerpoint slides
  • Working in schools – making worksheets, grids for lesson plans, posters, simple tick sheets, Powerpoint
  • Buisness analyst – using pivot tables, conditional format, graphs, linking spreadsheets in Excel
  • Small business use – designing simple Excel spreadsheets – simple formulae: sum, average %,  creating headed notepaper, business letters invoices, creating advertising materials

How much time do I need to give?

Ideally, you would be able to commit to volunteering one long half day a week, for example 10am – 2pm, on a permanent basis.
