Expressing yourself with confidence when you speak will boost the impact you make. Though remember that communication is two way so you need to listen as well as speak

Dealing with nerves

  • SMILE when you speak – it makes your voice sound more upbeat
  • Remember that a lot of nerves can’t be seen by others
  • Remember DAPPA :
  1. Dress - clothes that are appropriate and boost your confidence
  2. Appearance – open body language
  3. Prepare – do your research in advance
  4. Practice – what you want to say
  5. Avoidance – avoid stressful situations before an important conversation

When speaking and listening

  • Have a solid stance whether sitting or standing
  • Keep eye contact
  • Use appropriate gestures and body movement
  • Keep your breathing even
  • Use vocal variety
  • Use positive language
  • Have a structure – tell a story
  • Smile

Use of language

  • Use short sentences which are easier to follow
  • Descriptive language brings a story to life
  • Avoid jargon
  • Consider your choice of words
  • Use correct grammar and pronunciation

The content

  • What is your purpose – is it to inform, inspire, educate or persuade?
  • Structure – even short everyday conversations have a beginning, middle and an end
  • Include short personal stories
  • Include a few relevant facts and figures
  • Humour – helps to keep audience attention

Adapt your communication skills depending on your audience. Use appropriate tools to help you get your message across.
