LinkedIn is growing faster than ever before. It continues to be the primary tool for both In-house Recruiters and Recruitment Consultants to help fill open vacancies.

My three step approach to getting the most from LinkedIn:

1. Profile. Create a detailed, keyword-rich profile that tells your professional story. It’s more than just your CV and there are lots of new information

2. Network. Continuously grow and nurture your network, as they can help you identify new opportunities.

3. Content. Writing posts and engaging with others’ content (by liking and commenting) is how you get noticed on LinkedIn. It also triggers LinkedIn’s algorithm, which helps you appear in more Recruiter searches and on your connections’ newsfeed.

Important Note: Many people have success applying for jobs found in the LinkedIn Jobs Network. It’s assumed you will continue to review live vacancies, set up Job Alerts and apply as appropriate. The approach discussed in this session encourages you to leverage your network to unearth new opportunities and encourage the algorithm to show you in Searches.

Profile Must Dos

1. Have great imagery on your profile – add a background banner and have a strong headshot (close, cropped, head and shoulders shot, against a plain background).

2. Write a strong headline that explains in one sentence your key skills and experience.

3. Use your ‘About’ section as your Elevator Pitch. Write in the first person. Make it detailed. Avoid over-used language (e.g. I’m a great communicator, I’m driven and ambitious etc.). Use the story framework – Past, Present, Future to tell your ideal reader your story.

4. Feature 2-3 pieces of content which brings your experience and passion to life.

5. Add detail to the jobs listed in the Experience section which explains what the company does, your role and the impact you had/value you delivered.

Get noticed with your Content

  • Consistency, quality and authenticity are the most important elements to consider when you become active on LinkedIn.

          - Consistency – show up regularly, 10 mins every day Monday – Friday

          - Quality – be thoughtful and professional, and post content you think will interest your network

          - Authenticity – be yourself, act like you would do in a real life working environment.

  • Follow companies you are interested in working for so you see updates they share.
  • Follow people who work for those companies.
  • React to others’ posts, particularly for people you want to notice you. There are 7 different ways to react to someone else’s post – like, celebrate, support, funny, love, insightful, curious.
  • Try to create your own post once per week, to demonstrate your expertise and professional interests. Try writing a post about your job search, letting you network know what you’re looking for and asking for help.
